Traditionally, a hookwire which protrudes from the breast was used to identify the breast lesion to be removed in surgery. These hookwires are uncomfortable/unpleasant for women, protrude from the skin and can only be inserted on the day of surgery, resulting in surgical delays and stress for patients and radiologists inserting the hookwire.

Magseed seed technology (‘Magseed’), a 5x1mm magnetic seed (as small as a grain of rice), is safe and effective compared to hookwires. Magseeds can be placed prior to the day of surgery unlike hookwires, thus reducing delays in the operating theatre and improving theatre utilisation, allowing more women to access surgery in a timely manner.

The Royal seeks to replace outdated hookwire technology used in current breast surgery with standard of care Magseed – by purchasing the Sentimag platform. This platform allows detection of Magseed and magnetic tracer, Magtrace, replacing the current radioactive isotope injection used to identify sentinel lymph nodes in the axilla during breast surgery.
