ABOUT THE 24 HOUR SPINATHON

Gather your family and friends and keep your team's bike spinning for 24 hours to raise much-needed funds for The Royal's NICU.

Since its inception, the 24 Hour Spinathon has raised nearly $370,000 for the Newborn Intensive Care Unit at The Royal Hospital for Women.

Spearheaded by Mike and Jayne Blackwell in memory of their son Joe, the 24 Hour Spinathon has grown significantly to honour all babies that pass through the doors of The Royal's NICU - more than 1,000 annually.

The money raised from this incredible event has funded life-saving research and equipment in the unit - transforming the lifelong health of countless premature and critically ill newborns.

“To us Joe was our entire world and not many people got to meet him because he was so unwell.  It's really special to us to know that his legacy lives on.  He wasn’t just on this planet for 36 days, he is a big part of the NICU… and of the lives of people who are involved in the 24 Hour Spinathon.”

- Jayne Blackwell, Joe's Mum

THE NEWBORN INTENSIVE CARE UNIT AT THE ROYAL

The Newborn Intensive Care Unit or NICU at The Royal is a 46-bed unit where highly specialised care is provided for premature and critically ill newborns. Some of the 1,000 babies cared for every year in the unit can be born as early as 23 weeks and weigh as little as 500g.

Our team of dedicated nurses, doctors and allied health clinicians provide 24/7 care to each baby. Due to the fragile condition of many of the babies in the unit, state of the art equipment is necessary to ensure their survival. From ventilators, to incubators, humidifiers, and vitals monitors – these babies would not be able to survive without this equipment.

Almost 80% of the equipment in the NICU has been purchased through donations and fundraisers.

Joe Blackwell bravely fought for 5 weeks and 1 day under the care of The Royal's NICU staff
