Becoming Amazing Mothers

“In every nursery there are ghosts such that the parent and child may find themselves re-enacting a scene from another time with another set of characters"

BECOMING AMAZING MOTHERS (BAM)

BAM is a strengths based program of twelve sessions spanning 7 months. The program aims to prevent and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety that often emerge during pregnancy for women who have experienced difficult events in their childhood including emotional, physical and/or sexual abuse.

There is opportunity to establish a social network and develop stronger links to services in the wider community. You will be guided through mindfulness, relaxation and self-care skills as well as learning ways to build positive relationships with baby and others around you. The program has early evening sessions during pregnancy and daytime sessions after birth when baby comes along with you.

To come along please speak with yourMidwife or phone the Health Education Centre on (02) 9382 6700. BAM is free but bookings are essential and can be made online here.

Before attending the group you will be invited to an individual information session where you can ask questions about the program and talk with a facilitator of the program to make sure the group setting is the best option for you with this pregnancy.

WHY IS THE BAM PROGRAM NEEDED?

This program is unique.  Currently, there is no similar program available to women in pregnancy who are survivors of child abuse.

Screening of women who birthed at The Royal during 2011 and 2012 revealed a total of 506 women reported child abuse (247 reports of child sexual abuse and 259 of other type of abuse).

These figures have been recently updated and remain consistent with 7% of women reporting a history of child abuse at the first antenatal appointment, of which 48% reported sexual abuse. This equates to 268 women a year.

By making a donation today  you will help support the BAM program by providing additional counsellors and psychologists hours that can be offered to these vulnerable women.

The BAM program has the ability to improve the lives of future generations and break the cycle of abuse. A donation of $700 will provide funding for one woman’s place in the BAM program.
