WOMAN OF THE YEAR

As the only dedicated and leading women’s hospital in NSW, The Royal is full of extraordinary women. Dr. Rebecca Deans is one of them.

When a patient first arrives at The Royal, the goal is for them to feel safe, understood, and empowered to make informed decisions. The Royal prides itself on incredible continuity of care while understanding that each woman we see has a unique set of circumstances in which we provide tailored care.

Rebecca is a world-renowned researcher in the surgical management of benign gynaecology and endometriosis. Her passion lies with every woman and young person she meets in her clinics, working day-to-day as a gynaecologist and a fertility specialist at the Royal Fertility Research Centre. Rebecca is the only paediatric and adolescent gynaecologist at the Sydney Children’s Hospital as well as a senior lecturer at UNSW School of Women’s & Children’s Health.

Over her career, Rebecca’s accomplishments include over 60 peer-reviewed publications in leading national and international publications, 5 book chapters, and over 20 research papers, and had been invited to present 14 times at national and international meetings.

Rebecca’s latest endeavour has been as lead researcher of a collaborative uterine transplant project. She is working with international leaders to establish protocols for Australia’s first-ever transplant of this nature, performed at The Royal on the 7th of January 2023.

The Royal has since gone on to perform another 2 uterine transplants and we have recently announced the successful pregnancy of Kirsty, the first uterine transplant recipient.

2023 is shaping up to be an exceptional year for Rebecca as she celebrates having won the NSW Woman of the Year Award. This award recognises everything she had achieved in adolescent girls and woman’s health.

Outside of Bec’s incredible achievements, she is a mother of 4 children.

"'I love being a mum of 4 kids. It gives me so much satisfaction seeing them grow and develop. I think it makes me a better doctor, as it gives me so much more compassion and understanding. Despite the constant juggle, I wouldn't change any of it!"

Bec is a truly remarkable woman who is changing lives and shaping the way for women and girls of our future generations.

Donations to Heart for Her will help experts in women's and neonatal healthcare continue to provide such excellent care to every woman, newborn, and family when they need it most.
