Thursday 13th AprMy name is Martine and I am taking part in a trek to Base Camp Everest with MCRF & The Royal Hospital for Women. After receiving my own incredible care from the hospital and learning more about the MCRF, I couldn’t be more prouder to support this cause.
MCRF have worked extensively with the Hospital over the years and have raised over $600k!
All funds raised from the 2023 Everest Base Camp Trek will go towards funding the WHEAT Trial currently being undertaken in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit at The Royal.
WHEAT stands for WithHolding or continuing Enteral feeds Around blood Transfusion and aims to prevent necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) in preterm infants born before 30 weeks. Necrotising Enterocolitis (NEC) is a neonatal disease associated with high risks of death and disability.
Every donation, no matter how big or small will get us one step closer to preventing this devastating disease in premature babies at The Royal and beyond.
First meet up
Thursday 27th AprIt’s been 2 weeks since I shared my news about trekking to base camp Everest and I am completely blown away by every single person who has already donated and sent their words of encouragement and motivation. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
You have helped in so many ways, by raising vital funds and more importantly helping raise awareness. My own personal experience at the Royal Women’s Hospital was incredible but I wasn’t aware of the work and research that is needed at the NICU department.

I met the MCRF team last Sunday and we done a 24km trek along the Kiama coast. The views were breathe taking but I was blown away by the team. So many different people from different backgrounds coming together for a greater cause. It was very humbling and actually quite emotional. To think these people were strangers to me 2 weeks ago but I’ll make it to base camp Everest with them and tick of a huge bucket list item, while raising awareness and vital funds to help premature babies… incredible.
